VfL Bochum 1848 have signed Slovakian international Matúš Bero. For the 27-year-old midfielder, who most recently played as a regular for Dutch top-flight club Vitesse Arnhem, Germany is his third overseas stint after Turkey (Trabzonspor) and now five years in the Netherlands. Matúš Bero has signed a contract with VfL until June 3, 2026 on a free transfer.
FK AS Trenćín is the sporting home of the Slovakian international. Matúš Bero was able to celebrate his first sporting successes at the club from western Slovakia, winning the Slovakian double of championship and cup twice in a row. After 77 games and 38 scorer points in the domestic Fortuna Liga, the jump to the Turkish Süper Lig followed in 2016. The central midfielder played two seasons for the Black Sea club Trabzonspor, and in 2018 Vitesse Arnhem brought him into the Eredivisie. Under current VfL head coach Thomas Letsch, the Gelderlanders reached European competitions twice, with Bero leading the way as captain. Bero has played for the Slovak federation from the Under-17s onwards and currently makes 26 appearances for the senior team.
Marc Lettau, technical director of VfL Bochum 1848, said of the new signing: “Matúš Bero combines many things that help our team: an internationally experienced player who has his qualities between the penalty areas and looks for the finish himself. Thomas Letsch knows about his qualities, which Matúš Bero has already proven as a leading player.”
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to move to Bochum and the Bundesliga now,” said Matúš Bero. “For me, it’s the next level in my career. I’m happy and proud at the same time that such a traditional club as VfL Bochum is interested in me and my skills. I can’t wait to get to know the team and especially the stadium. I haven’t been there live yet, but the incredible atmosphere and energy on the part of the fans was already noticeable in the broadcasts. I’m looking forward to that.”
