XtraTime reports, Atletico de Kolkata after the end of the relationship with Atletico Madrid would for the moment be known as ATK with it being unclear if the franchise would pick another name going into ISL-4.
Majority ATK stakeholder Sanjiv Goenka also spoke about Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, whom he called the big boys of Indian football while they ATK are the small kids.
I think whatever East Bengal and Mohun Bagan related damage control statements that ATK
management is now making , it has come a bit too late. Over the last 3 seasons ATK was the
most popular club of ISL but most folks from out of Bengal were not aware that 80 percent of
the supporters of ATK are hardcore supporters of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. Nearly all of
these hardcore supporters of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan now terribly hate ATK. ATK had
created all kinds of obstacles for EB and MB in the recent times.ATK wanted to keep EB & MB
out of ISL and out of Kolkata and wanted to dry the pockets of the fans of EB & MB. This
strategy misfired and now the matches of ATK would be held along with the I-league matches of
EB and MB. Now the whole of India would get to know the true fan base of ATK , or rather the
zero fan base of ATK.
It would be now challenging for ATK to retain their existing co-sponsors because their co-
sponsors would be sponsoring a club which is now hated like evil by the huge majority of Bengal.
Lastly , a day after calling ATK as ” Amar Tomar Kolkata” , ATK owners decided not to pick from the Draft any
high performing bengali players. Probably after reviewing the multiple fan forums of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan , ATK management has realized that its now too late to calm down the huge majority of Bengal who have now nothing but sheer hatred for ATK.
