Vitaly Mutko resigns as 2018 FIFA World Cup LOC chief!

In the end it all happened relative quickly as only days after resigning as Russian Football Union chief, Vitaly Mutko has now also left his role as head of the 2018 FIFA World Cup LOC (Local Organising Committee).

Earlier Vitaly Mutko has resigned temporarily as Russian Football Union chief for six months to clear his name in an upcoming litigation over his lifetime Olympic ban by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on December 5 amid allegations of his involvement in a state-sponsored Russian doping program.

Now Russian state media report that Mutko has resigned from the Russia 2018 LOC to avoid any complications for the 2018 FIFA World Cup as well as FIFA, while stating that he is concentrating on his government work.

The chairman of the Russia 2018 body’s supervisory council, Alexey Sorokin, has taken his place.

“Russia’s 2018 World Cup Local Organizing Committee regrettably accepted the news regarding Vitaly Mutko’s decision to leave the position of the chairman of the organization,” the committee said in a statement.

“From now on, Alexey Sorokin, who is the general director of the organisation’s supervisory council, will be also in charge of the position of the head of Russia’s 2018 World Cup Local Organising Committee. Changes in the leading positions of the organising committee ‘Russia-2018’ will not affect the course of preparation for the World Cup.”
