Webinar series kicks off countdown to 7th AFC Medical Conference!

The build-up to the 7th Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Medical Conference commenced with a series of webinars held between October 25 and December 19, 2022, that aimed at strengthening the Confederation’s resolve in establishing the best practices in sports science in Asia.

In the first of the five highly anticipated webinars, the received updates on the latest anti-doping regulations from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Following the welcome address by the AFC General Counsel and Director of Legal Affairs Andrew Mercer, the head of FIFA’s Anti-doping Unit Alexis Weber, conducted informative sessions discussing topics such as the WADA’s Prohibited List for 2023.

This was followed by an intriguing session on environmentally sustainable forms of doping control, which was led by FIFA Anti-doping Manager, Daniel Kim.

With the closing remarks of Dato’ Dr. Gurucharan Singh, Chairperson of the AFC Medical Committee, Day 1 of the series drew to an end.

The second instalment of the series that took place on November 10, was mainly designed for the participants to understand the AFC Administrations System (AFCAS) on AFC Medical Officer’s reporting system and included theoretical presentations as well as practical training.

Meanwhile, on November 18, the third day of the webinar series, the focus rested on examining various case studies and thoroughly understanding the demands of current medical guidelines, policies, and administrative procedures. Discussions on legal regulations continued on the penultimate day (December 6) as well.

Lastly, on the final day, December 19, representatives from the AFC’s Competitions and Football Events Division (CFED) provided a detailed overview of the Confederation’s competitions in the 2023/24 season and deliberated on the various ways in which personnel from AFC CFED may be required to liaise with the delegates of the medical team.

The activities and learnings of this series will finally be tested when the 76 AFC Medical and Doping Control Officers who participated in this webinar series undertake the AFC Football Emergency Medicine Course and the FIFA/AFC Anti-Doping Accreditation Course which are scheduled to commence on March 2, 2023, in conjunction with the 7th AFC Medical Conference in Qatar.
