AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey via a tweet has confirmed that the 2022/23 season champions of the I-League would gain promotion to next seasons Indian Super League.
AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey in the tweet wrote, “According to the Roadmap between AIFF and AFC, starting with the 2022-23 season, the winners of the Hero I-League will stand a chance to be promoted to the Hero ISL season 2023-24 basis fulfilling sporting merit and clearing the Premier 1 Licensing criteria.”
This step of at least granting promotion for the I-League champions to the Indian Super League is a key point of the FIFA/AFC roadmap which had been put together a few years ago for a way forward for Indian club football.
This is a big day for the I-League teams who are spending money on their squads to be able to fight for the title.
But there could be an issue and that is the I-League champions would have to fulfil the Premier 1 Licensing criteria to be granted induction into the Indian Super League.
Important step for #IndianFootball! https://t.co/fYcHvatH59
