1.FC Köln sign Austria’s Dejan Ljubicic from Rapid Wien!

Bundesliga side 1.FC Köln have secured the services of Dejan Ljubicic before the summer transfer window. The defensive midfielder will join on a free transfer from Rapid Wien and has signed a four-year deal at FC Köln.

“We are very pleased that we could convince Dejan to join FC. He has been fantastic this season and has led Rapid Wien as captain at the age of 23. That naturally perks your interest. From the summer, he will strengthen us with his superb quality in defensive midfield,” said FC Managing Director, Horst Heldt.

Ljubicic has made 19 league appearances this season for Rapid Wien, setting up an impressive five goals. He also scored in the UEFA Champions League qualifying (two games) and notched up an assist in Rapid’s Europa League campaign (three matches).

“I decided relatively early on for 1.FC Köln. It is a huge traditional club and, regardless of which division FC are playing in, Horst Heldt has shown me a great perspective here. That is the next step for me, in order to develop myself as a footballer and a person,” said Dejan Ljubicic.

The Wien-born midfielder learnt his trade in Rapid’s academy and, in the under-17s, became an Austrian youth international. He moved to 1. Wiener Neustädter SC in the 2017-18 before returning to Rapid. Since then, the former under-21 international has developed into a first-team regular and captain. He has played 126 times for Rapid, scoring eight goals and setting up a further 10.
