Ajax Amsterdam extends head coach Erik ten Hag’s contract!

Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam has reached an agreement with head coach Erik ten Hag for the extension of his contract which previously ran until June 30, 2022. The new agreement will take effect on July 1, 2021 and will run until June 30, 2023.

Ten Hag (born in Haaksbergen, February 2, 1970) has been the head coach of Ajax’s first team since January 1, 2018. Formerly a professional football player at FC Twente, De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk and FC Utrecht, he worked for a number of years in various technical positions at FC Twente, PSV, Go Ahead Eagles, FC Bayern Munich II and FC Utrecht after he hung up his boots.

In the 2018/19 season, he led Ajax to the Eredivisie title, won the KNVB Cup and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Ten Hag then won the Rinus Michels Award (given to the best manager in the Eredivisie) for the second time in his career. He also won Johan Cruijff Shield at the start of the 2019/2020 season. That season was then prematurely called to an end due to Covid-19, with Ajax at the top of the table under Ten Hag.

In the 2020/2021 season, Ajax finished third in their group in the UEFA Champions League and after having eliminated Lille and BSC Young Boys, were knocked by AS Roma in the Europa League. Only a few days after, though, Ten Hag and Ajax beat Vitesse to take home the Dutch Cup. Ten Hag’s team needs one more point from their remaining four Eredivisie matches to be able to seal the 35th national title in Ajax’s history.
