Annike Krahn becomes VfL Bochum Sporting Director of Women’s Department!

The women’s and girls’ football of VfL Bochum 1848 will have a new sporting director: Annike Krahn will take over the management of the department.

The new sporting director is looking forward to her new professional field: “Of course, it’s a special situation for me as a Bochum native. Being able to work in my hometown, the place where my football career began and where I successfully completed my studies, feels like coming full circle,” says Annike Krahn. “At VfL, you can feel the will to further develop women’s and girls’ football, as all the discussions have shown. It’s a big challenge, but we’re ready to tackle it in an innovative and professional way. I will support this commitment with all my strength and with a lot of passion, contribute my ideas and experience so that we can create structures to be successful in the long term.”

Annike Krahn has won almost every major title in women’s football in her long career. She was a FIFA Women’s World Cup winner with the DFB’s U-19 juniors (2004), and three years later she received the World Cup trophy as a senior international, after a 2-0 final victory against Brazil. In addition, there are two titles at European Championships (2009, 2013) plus two medals at the Olympic Games: gold in 2016 and bronze in 2008. In club football, the defender won the DFB Cup twice with FCR 2001 Duisburg (2009, 2010), and FCR also won the UEFA Women’s Cup in 2009, the precursor to the Champions League. In her 13 years at the highest European level, she played for three clubs: FCR 2001 Duisburg, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The graduate sports scientist is currently employed by the DFB as team manager of the U-17 juniors, but will already get an initial overview at VfL. The German U-17s will play the qualifying matches for the European Championships in Sweden in March. Should the DFB team reach the finals in May, Krahn will still be in charge of the German juniors there.
