The 2020/21 German Bundesliga season kicked off on Friday, September 18 night with champions FC Bayern Munich scoring an emphatic 8-0 win over a struggling FC Schalke 04.
No fans were allowed at the Allianz Arena due to rising COVID-19 cases in Munich, a sad reality of our current pandemic times.
But what is very worrying for the Bundesliga rivals of Bayern Munich and the organising DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga is the domination of the Bavarians in the German league, then FC Bayern are chasing their ninth straight title and since Borussia Dortmund in the 2011/12 season, there has been only one champion in German football.
Now with FC Bayern going into the season as treble winners and the opener showed that the hunger still being there, it will be interesting to see if Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer 04 Leverkusen or another club can challenge the almighty FC Bayern.
And that would be important than many abroad and even some within Germany view the Bundesliga as a one team league like the Italian Serie A due to Juventus FC and the French Ligue 1 due to Paris Saint-Germain.
On the other side, the Bundesliga is an entertaining league with tactical brilliance but with one likely champion in recent years, the race for European spots plus the fight for survival and against relegation often is forgotten or not seen and then there is the great football which is played in the Bundesliga.
But to blame FC Bayern Munich for their success over the years, rather better to say decades, would be the wrong approach, then since their promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965, they have worked hard for their success on and off the field to become one of the most successful and financially stable clubs in world football as I know from my own experience in working for FC Bayern.
Now that the 2020/21 season has kicked off, we will have to wait and see, if Bayern Munich win their straight ninth title or if any team can upset them.
