CAF releases 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League – Group Stage Best XI!

CAF has announced the Best XI of the 2022 Women’s Champions League following the completion of the tournament’s group phase, with the semi-finalist clubs dominating the list of top performers in the tournament.

Players from five different clubs of the eight participating team were included in the list of the Best XI as selected by members of CAF’s Technical Study Group (TSG) after the first round of the event.

ASFAR’s impressive shot-stopper Khadija Er-Rmichi has been named as the tournament’s leading goalkeeper so far with her teammates Ghizlane Chhiri and Nouhaïla Benzina as wingbacks in the defence guarded by Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Bambanani Mbane and Zanele Nhlapho.

The formidable midfield is built around ASFAR’s Siham Boukhami in the heart of the pitch and being supported by Green Buffaloes’ Ireen Lungu and Bayelsa Queens’ Maryann Ezanagu.

ASFAR enterprising attacker Fatima Tagnaout marauds down the wing while Simba Queens captain fantastic Opah Clement is on the other flank to provide inswingers complete the tantalising line up of the tournament’s Best XI to date.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ fantastic forward Lelona Daweti gets the nod for the striker’s position high up on the pitch as the leading goalscorer of the tournament with four goals to date.

On top five-goal nominations, Bayelsa Queens forward Mary Anjor’s strike against Sundowns and Simba’s Clement superb finish against Green Buffaloes are top contenders for the best goal of the group stage.

Close challengers are Simba’s Asha Djafari’s glancing header against Buffaloes, followed by Sundowns’ Mbane header and Boitumelo Rabale’s brilliant free kick – both against Wadi Degla.

As the eight-club championship reaches the knockout stages, these players will certainly be crucial as their teams aim to celebrate the continental crown in the second edition.

The TSG made up of Clementine Toure (Cote d’Ivoire head coach), Meskerem Tadesse Goshime (Head of CAF Women’s Football Development), Jacqui Shipanga (Namibia Technical Director),and Lamia Boumehdi (Former Morocco international).
