FC Goa’s Ayush Chhetri: The ISL so far has been a wonderful learning experience!

Ayush Chhetri has been one of FC Goa’s finds so far in the ongoing Indian Super League 2022-23 season. While not many expected the young midfielder to earn a place in Carlos Pena’s starting XI amidst a host of talented and experienced players, he has already gone ahead and done just that.

The 19-year-old played in all of FC Goa’s six matches so far, clocking 383 minutes in total. He started in four out of these six matches and has averaged 2.167 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.667 blocks per game, in addition to maintaining an impressive passing accuracy of 82.81%.

“Honestly I cannot express how I feel right now. Making the upgrade in terms of playing in the ISL was tough for me initially, but game time during the Durand Cup 2022 and the pre-season camp I had with the rest of my mates in the First Team helped a lot,” Chhetri said, ahead of the Gaurs’ upcoming league clash against Bengaluru FC.

“Regarding my playing time in the ISL, I want to thank the coaching staff for believing in me and giving me those wonderful opportunities, and I look forward to proving them right with every chance I get.

‘Have already learned a lot from Edu’
At FC Goa, the youngster enjoys the privilege of working with several senior stars, who have contributed to his growth with their words of advice and encouragement.

“Working with them has been one of the highlights of my stint so far with the Club. They’re all really helpful in training sessions as well as matches. I’ve been partnering with Edu Bedia in the midfield, and while that’s a huge responsibility, his support has helped me in adapting to the league.

“Edu always corrects me when I’m doing something wrong and instructs me on what the right thing is, to do in any situation. I’ve already learnt a lot from him,” he further added.

The Gaurs are in a good mood following their home victory last week against ATK Mohun Bagan. Overall, they are currently at fourth place on the points’ table, with four wins from six matches.

However, Ayush Chhetri maintains that this should not influence them negatively, as Bengaluru FC poses them a fresh challenge on Saturday.

“We did well in the matches we won, and learned some lessons in the two games that we lost. Now, we are really looking forward to doing well in our remaining matches, and trying to win all of them. We have analysed our mistakes from the previous matches and learned from them, and we are keen to do better going forward,” he said.

“As everyone knows, Bengaluru FC are a good team with a good mentality. I was part of the FC Goa Durand Cup squad that faced them earlier this year. They have a good quality squad and went on to win the Durand Cup.

“When we faced them, we managed a 2-2 draw and that gives me confidence that come Saturday, we’ll have another good game against them. We have to work hard to get the three points and that’s what we will be doing,” the 19-year-old concluded.
