Fighting India go down 0-3 to USA in their 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup opener!

A fighting India U-17 national team opened their 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup – Group A campaign with a 0-3 loss to the United States of America at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Friday, October 6 night.

India made a nervous start into the game with the USA in control from the start but they survived the early onslaught and slowly found their way into the match.

But on the half hour mark, the referee pointed to the dreaded spot for a contact between India defender Jitendra Singh and US striker Josh Sargent, which could have been allowed to play on. The US captain Sargent himself took the penalty and gave his team the lead as he send keeper Dheeraj Singh the wrong way.

Towards the end of the first session, the US slowed things down and allowed India more space and the chance to combine. India’s first attempt on goal came off Aniket Jadhav, but his shot was no problem for keeper Justin Garces. At the break the USA had a 1-0 lead over hosts India.

After the restart the US pressured India again and it was keeper Dheeraj Singh, India’s best man on the pitch tonight, who kept India initially in the game, but in the 51st minute after a corner Chris Durkin doubled the USA’s lead.

Only a short time later in the 55th minute, India had their best chance of the game thus far after a defensive blunder, but livewire Komal Thatal’s attempt just missed an empty net.

Thereafter the USA controlled proceedings with India not finding a recipe to bother the US until the 84th minute, following a corner Anwar Ali’s attempt hits the woodwork but from there the USA get a chance to counter attack and Andrew Carleton coolly scores to make it 0-3 and seal the game for the Americans.

In the end the USA won the match deserving 3-0 against a fighting India, who should learn a lot from this match to try and get better results against Colombia and Ghana. With a bit of luck one goal surely was possible, but Luis Norton de Matos and his boys can take a lot from this performance.
