French Guiana fielding Florent Malouda in CONCACAF Gold Cup could land them in trouble!

Former French international Florent Malouda playing for his native French Guiana in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage match against Honduras yesterday, could land his native country in trouble.

37 year old Malouda, who last season played for the Delhi Dynamos in the Indian Super League, had played for French Guiana in the Caribbean Cup which did not raise any issues with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), but for North American confederation CONCACAF its an issue as under FIFA rules no player can represent two countries at senior level in official matches.

CONCACAF in an official statement yesterday said, “In regards to the election of the French Guiana National Team to field player Florent Malouda in this evening’s Gold Cup match against the Honduras National Team, and in line with the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 Regulations which are governed by FIFA Regulations pertaining to player eligibility, the matter has been referred to the CONCACAF Gold Cup Disciplinary Committee. The Disciplinary Committee will review the case and render its decision in due time.”

French Guiana is not a member of world football governing body FIFA as an overseas department of the French Republic, but is a member of the CFU and CONCACAF which allows it to participate in regional and continental competitions.

As per FIFA laws, the CONCACAF Gold Cup Disciplinary Committee would have to award the match and the points to Honduras due to the players regulations violation, but one will have to wait and see what final decision is taken.
