Germany’s Bundesliga no longer to be aired on Star Sports in India!

In sad news for football fans in India, Germany’s Bundesliga will no longer to be aired on Star Sports across the subcontinent.

The contract between the DFL – Deutsche Fußball Liga and Star Network ended with the conclusion of the 2019/20 season and the two sides could not find common ground to renew the contract for reasons which are not in the public domain.

And this comes just weeks after Bayern Munich lifted the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League title to complete their second-ever treble of Bundesliga, DFB German Cup and UEFA Champions League.

This comes as a massive disappointment to the growing number of Bundesliga fans in India, who would have loved to see Bayern Munich battle rivals Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and others for the 2020/21 Bundesliga titles.

Here an interesting fan article: Shame and heartbreak: the Bundesliga loses its broadcaster in India despite Champions League success !

But not all is over for worried fans then the DFL is in talks with Indian television channels and OTT platforms to try and secure the best possible broadcast deal for the Bundesliga clubs and their Indian fans before the league’s kick-off match between Bayern Munich and FC Schalke 04 on Friday, September 18.

My, Arunava Chaudhuri’s take on things is, that “The German Bundesliga needs to find a suitable broadcast partner in India, who is willing to spend money on marketing and promoting the top tier of German football.

It has been said over and over again in the last 15 odd years by different Indian broadcasters but finally nothing much happened except the live broadcast of matches and showing of DFL produced content.

The new DFL broadcast partner in India needs to understand that spending money on marketing and promoting the Bundesliga is a must to grow its fan base in the Indian subcontinent.

That is what not only Indian fans of the Bundesliga deserve but also what needs to happen, so German Bundesliga clubs show more interest in India and Indian football.”
