Hong Kong FA widens grassroots initiatives to parent!

The Hong Kong Football Association LTD. (HKFA), a silver member in the AFC Grassroots Charter, has extended their grassroots activities to parents by launching an innovative Parents Volunteer Programme – Parents Seminar and Workshop.

HKFA aims to provide a safer and conducive environment for children, and the latest series of programmes were mooted to encourage better parental support that is proven to help in the development of young children in the sport.

This idea started from a research conducted with 150 parents who recognised the importance of having better football knowledge as well as guidance on the topics of child protection and psychology.

Based on the research, HKFA established volunteer programmes for parents with the first seminar held in September to explain the aims and objectives of the latest initiative.

In October, HKFA organised a ‘Fun Day’ at the Jokey Club HKFA Football Training Center for parents and children who cooperated in small-sided games while parents also participated in a role play activity where they acted as coaches, referees and even as a photographer.

Additionally, 13 parents joined the ‘Parents as Assistant Coaches’ and ‘Parents as Referee’ activities in October and November where referee tutors shared their experience and responsibilities to the parents.

HKFA General Secretary, Vincent Yuen, said: “As FIFA mentioned: ‘Millions of people in the world are passionate about football. No matter how they are involved in the game, everyone has the right to enjoy football in a safe and supportive environment’.”

“While many people continue to join football activities around the world, the focus has always been on the competitive aspect. But we should be concerned of the human side behind football development.
