Eintracht Frankfurt have completed another signing for the coming campaign, securing the services of central defender Jérôme Onguéné from FC Red Bull Salzburg on a contract until summer 2027.
Eintracht Frankfurt continue to press ahead with their plans for the future after securing the services of Jérôme Onguéné. The central defender is under contract with FC Salzburg until the end of the current campaign but will join the Eagles on July 1, 2022 on a contract through to June 30, 2027.
The 24-year-old has been a Salzburg player since the back end of August 2017. He has won four Austrian league titles and three domestic cups in that time, registering 13 goals and five assists across 111 appearances in all competitions. He has also made 21 outings in Europe, including 13 in the UEFA Champions League and eight in the UEFA Europa League.
The 1.87-metre defender is no stranger to German football. After coming through the youth ranks at FC Sochaux, he first moved abroad to VfB Stuttgart in January 2017. After six months, the former France youth international and 2016 U-19 European Championship winner joined Salzburg on loan before making the move permanent. Onguéné, whose time in France will come to an end in June 2022, also had a brief loan spell with Genoa.
Onguéné has won ten caps for the Cameroon national team, whom he helped finish third at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Board member for sport Markus Krösche said, “By signing Jérôme Onguéné, we’re adding further substance and flexibility to our defence. On the one hand, Jérôme brings with him many years of first-team experience, including on the biggest European stage, and yet at 24 he is far from reaching the end of his development. It’s certainly special that we’re signing a player who, at his young age, has already made numerous appearances in the UEFA Champions League. It speaks volumes for Eintracht Frankfurt to have secured the services of such a player. We’re looking forward to working with Jérôme.”
