1.FSV Mainz 05 have secured the signing of attacking midfielder Nadiem Amiri from league leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The 27-year-old is extremely experienced, playing a total of 225 games in the Bundesliga and German DFB-Pokal (22 goals, 28 assists) for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, as well as 36 matches in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League (3 goals, 5 assists).
Amiri, who was born and grew up in Ludwigshafen, won his first cap for Germany in 2019, having played for several youth sides, with whom he won the UEFA U-21 European Championship in 2017. He has appeared a total of five times for Germany so far. Amiri has signed a contract valid until June 2026 with FSV Mainz 05 – the two clubs have agreed that the details of the transfer will remain undisclosed.
“We were looking for a creative and quick central midfielder, one that immediately improves our attack, and have found that exact player in Nadiem Amiri. With the experience of over 250 games in the Bundesliga, the Champions League, the Europa League and in international football, Nadiem will massively strength our squad as we battle relegation. He believes he can immediately help us out and is eager to do so. As a local-born lad, it’s a bit of a homecoming for Nadiem,” said 1.FSV Mainz 05 board member for sport Christian Heidel.
Nadiem Amiri added, “I’ve known Mainz 05 for a long time and believe that the club’s current position in the table does not reflect the quality of this team. I had good conversations with the club and could sense their faith in me. I’m really excited to get started and to hopefully end this season successfully. I’m looking forward to meeting the 05er fans and to my first home game on Saturday, and I hope I can start my time here with a win.”
