Refereeing development continues strong momentum in Kuala Lumpur!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s commitment to enhance the talent pool of the Continent’s match officials was further strengthened on Thursday with the conclusion of three landmark development initiatives which were held concurrently.

The three courses – the AFC Referees Recruitment 2023 for both Men’s Football and Futsal held from January 16 to 18, as well as the AFC Women Referees & Assistant Referees Selection 2023 conducted from January 16 to 19 – were designed to ensure the Confederation remained at the forefront of developing world-class match officials.

The AFC Referees Recruitment 2023 (Men’s Football) saw the participation of 32 match officials from 25 Member Associations (MAs) while the AFC Referees Recruitment 2023 (Men’s Futsal) played host to 16 participants from 12 MAs, with 11 women referees from 10 MAs and eight Assistant Referees from seven MAs benefitting from the AFC Women Referees & Assistant Referees Selection 2023.

The courses, which commenced on Monday, was aimed at evaluating the match officials on their technical capacities through a series of video tests whilst elevating their knowledge of the latest Laws of the Game.

Upon being informed of the fitness test protocols, the participants’ fitness levels were also assessed while refereeing know-how was examined through the analysis of actual match incidents, with special emphasis also placed on upskilling their English and report writing capabilities.

All three courses concluded with insightful feedback exercises while the AFC Women Referees & Assistant Referees Selection 2023 course also focused significantly on practical match performance sessions.

The AFC Referees Recruitment 2023 (Men’s Football) was conducted by AFC Consultant Raymond Olivier from the United Kingdom, AFC Elite Referee Instructors, Cheung Yim Yau from Hong Kong and Tseytlin Vladislav from Uzbekistan as well as AFC Elite Referee Fitness Instructors Mike Chan from Hong Kong, Thailand’s Praew Semaksuk and Banjar Mohammed B J Al-Dosari from Qatar.

Meanwhile, the AFC Referees Recruitment 2023 (Men’s Futsal) was organised under the guidance of Abdulrahman Abdulqader Abdulrahman Abdulla from Bahrain, Badrul Hisham from Malaysia, and Seyedsadreddin Mousavi from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

At the same time, AFC Elite Referee Instructors Ali Altraifi from Saudi Arabia, Ms. Maria Rebello Piedade from India and Ms. Widiya Habibah Binti Shamsuri from Malaysia provided their expertise to the AFC Women Referees & Assistant Referees Selection 2023.

Successful participants from the AFC Referees Recruitment (Men’s Football & Futsal) will be required to undergo three successful assessment visits, in order to join the AFC Elite Referees and Assistant Referees Panel.
