Video Support System set to debut at AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2024!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will mark a significant milestone in its quest to uphold the highest standards of officiating when it introduces the Video Support (VS) system at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ Thailand 2024, set to take place from April 17 to 28.

In a bid to ensure that Asian referees are well-versed in the latest technological advancements in officiating, the Confederation conducted the AFC Elite Futsal Referees Seminar in 2023, with the specific intention of familiarizing its match officials with innovations such as the VS system, underscoring the AFC’s determination to provide tailor-made support to its match officials.

The technology, first employed on the global stage at the 2021 edition of the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania, allows officials to assess their decisions using a review operator and a pitch-side monitor, thereby enhancing the accuracy of decisions made on the pitch.

The system comes into play if the referee’s decision is challenged by the Head Coaches (or designated Team Official) of either team. This applies specifically to goal/no-goal situations, penalty kick/no penalty kick, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.

Moreover, a referee can also resort to the VS to ensure accuracy in situations such as technical difficulties with the chronometer, to verify whether a goal has been scored, or to confirm whether the ball crossed the goal line before the signal for the end of a period.

Following the successful implementation of the Semi-Automated Offside Technology as well as the VAR system making a full debut at the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023, the introduction of the VS technology is yet another indication of the AFC’s continuous efforts towards maintaining its position as a model Confederation.
