AFC Technical Committee enhances the development of Asia’s coaches!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Technical Committee outlined its ambitions to strengthen the foundations for the Continent’s coaches to further elevate the standards of the Asian game at its first meeting held virtually today.

Led by Chairperson Kohzo Tashima, the Committee acknowledged the recent achievements of Asian teams on the world stage and emphasised the importance for the AFC to continue its wide-ranging efforts towards enhancing the quality and quantity of Asian coaches.

In view of the strategic reforms to the AFC’s club competitions which will be introduced from the 2024/25 season, the Committee agreed that the current Minimum Coaching Requirements (MCR) for the current AFC Champions League will apply to both the AFC Champions League Elite and the AFC Champions League 2; whilst the MCR for the AFC Cup will apply to the AFC Challenge League.

Members of the Committee were also pleased to note the continued and crucial impact of the AFC Coaching Convention in raising the capabilities of the Continent’s tutors and educators, and strengthening the development of Asia’s future coaches across all levels.

Since the launch of the Convention in 2017, as many as 44 Member Associations (MAs) are currently benefitting from the groundbreaking programme, with growing concerted efforts undertaken by MAs to upgrade their levels of endorsements.

As part of efforts to ensure greater support to all MAs, the Committee approved the 2024 AFC Specialised Coaching Courses, in particular the AFC Fitness Coaching Certificate courses for MAs that have yet to be integrated into the AFC Coaching Convention.

At the same time, the Committee also approved the key principles and parameters of the Technical Agreement between the AFC and its sister Confederation UEFA, which will pave the way for the mutual recognition of coaching qualifications and greater collaboration and knowledge exchange in all aspects of coach education.

The Committee was also updated on the latest developments of the two corresponding milestone technical programmes – the AFC Elite Youth Scheme and the AFC Grassroots Charter memberships – as well as the AFC Special Grassroots and Elite Youth Football Awards 2023.

Additionally, the length and breadth of the Confederation’s bespoke and tailormade seminars, panel meetings, forums, conferences and courses, all with the aim of raising the technical expertise of the AFC’s MAs, were also outlined in greater detail.

All decisions must be ratified by the AFC Executive Committee before taking effect.
