NorthEast United FC under new technical advisor Avram Grant scored a surprise 2-1 win over high flying FC Goa at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati.
It was an intense start by both sides with NorthEast United FC looking a transformed side under new technical advisor Avram Grant and assistant coach Eelco Schattorie, while FC Goa once more had a slow start.
In the 21st minute the hosts went ahead when Danilo Lopes found fellow Brazilian Marcinho whose deft shot hit both posts and then went in as keeper Kattimani looked on. But FC Goa upped the tempo after once more going behind and only seven minutes later they were on level terms. A Pronay Halder cross from the left could not be cleared by Jose Gonsalves and an opportunistic Manuel Arana volleyed the home into the net past Gonsalves and T.P. Rehenesh.
FC Goa had a chance to go ahead through Brandon Fernandes before the break, but it stayed 1-1 at the end of the first half.
Things changed at the start of the second session as in the 52nd minute Marcinho found Seiminlen Doungel free on the right, who ran goalwards and his placed shot beat keeper Kattimani to give the Highlanders the lead once more and thereafter they had the chance to enhance their lead, but it stayed 2-1 and towards the end of the match, FC Goa created a lot of pressure to equalise.
Substitute Manvir Singh hit the post, while Reagan Singh twice headed out the ball off the line, while T.P. Rehenesh saved a few as well to give Avram Grant a successful start to life in the ISL with the three points.
