AFC Coach Education Panel Meeting emphasises key role of tutor!

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s pursuit in enhancing the capabilities of its Member Associations (MAs) reached yet another milestone when the 4th AFC Coach Education Panel Meeting for the 2022-2023 term took place on Tuesday in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

Taking place physically for the first time since the relaxation of COVID-19 related restrictions, the meeting was attended by representatives from 12 MAs.

Following AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh’s opening remarks, the panel members received updates on the AFC Coaching Convention, which currently endorses 43 of the Confederation’s MAs and comprises 13 Pro Level members, 19 A Level members and 11 B Level members.

Moreover, the panellists were pleased to note that 10 more MAs are currently awaiting evaluation for a Pro-level membership, while six more are set to be assessed at the A level and one MA is currently pending evaluation for a B Level membership.

The panel members also reviewed and discussed ways to further enhance the AFC Coaching Convention regulations in order to pave a comprehensive path for the future of Asian football.

“If you don’t have good coach educators and tutors, it is not possible to improve to the level that we want,” said Roxburgh.

“Our aim is to see Asian football on a par with the best in the world. At the moment, the benchmark has been set by Europe. We need Asia to match the European standards, and the key to closing that gap lies in developing excellent coach educators,” he added.

With one of the major topics discussed being the role of a top-level tutor, the panellists participated in a particularly engaging and detailed dialogue to outline the salient characteristics that define an exceptional educator.

This included attributes which are both technical and universal, and ranged from having an analytical eye to carrying out duties with humility and being willing to be on a perpetual learning curve.
“When you’re in a tutor’s role, it’s easy to spot errors but the challenge is to find solutions. It’s also imperative to constantly keep yourselves up to date. These are the finer details that set you apart at the Pro-level,” Roxburgh explained.

The panel members highlighted the value of coach education and its importance in supporting AFC’s ambition to succeed on the world stage.
