ASEAN delegates and medical practitioners graced the launch of The Asian Football Confederation Emergency Medicine and Anti-Doping Regional Course at St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City in the Philippines on Tuesday.
The sixth edition of the regional course will run from October 31 until November 3 2017 and will touch on various topics: injury prevention strategies, sudden cardiac arrests, life threatening football medical emergencies, doping and anti-doping in football.
AFC Medical Committee Chairperson Dato’ Dr Gurcharan Singh underlined the key role the course has to play in the modern game during his opening address.
“The aim of the course is to ensure that the doctors who are charged in taking care of players, are trained in the correct administration as well as the standardised medical care as per international standards and the practice of evidence-based football medicine,” said Dr Gurcharan Singh.
“About 300 million players get injured in a calendar year, which translates to about two injuries per match. Injury prevention methods can bring down this figure but only if implemented effectively.
“Countries such as Germany, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Canada and New Zealand are role models and have successfully implemented injury prevention methods. Their form in tournaments is exemplary and adaptation is applicable for other team sports,” he added.
Professor Efraim Kramer, who is the tournament officer for the FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia and advisor on football emergency medicine with the FIFA medical committee highlighted on cardiac arrests, resuscitation and the importance of having an external defibrillator.
“An external defibrillator should be at hand at all times during a match or even training sessions. It is wrong not to have otherwise as it can save lives,” said Kramer.
“That is the standard of medical care, it should not be any other way. It has paid dividends for those who had it, and caused deaths for those who didn’t. If you don’t have it then you are negligent,” said Kramer.
Philippine Football Federation (PFF) General Secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes said: “We are honoured with the opportunity given by the AFC to host the sixth edition of the regional medical course in Manila.”
The four-day programme comprises theoretical and practical sessions and is hosted by the PFF with the support and cooperation of St. Luke’s Medical Centre Global City and ZOLL Medical Corp.
