Bengaluru FC’s Marco Pezzaiuoli: We’re not happy, but as a young team we’ll get better!

Bengaluru FC head coach Marco Pezzaiuoli spoke about his side’s defeat to ATK Mohun Bagan, analyzed the team’s performance, and more…

On the game against ATK Mohun Bagan…

It was a strange game where we dominated for 90 minutes but didn’t create any chances throughout. We did well till the final third, but beyond that we weren’t effective. ATK Mohun Bagan had two chances in the first half, both of them were on the counter-attack. While we did have good organization, one or two players didn’t go to the ball when required and that’s why they created those chances.

The goal that we conceded in the first half was from a counter-attack that started with our corner kick, where one player was not in the right position. As a young team that has not spent a long time playing together, we need to organize better when someone is not in the right position. ATK Mohun Bagan played long balls in hopes of our players making some mistakes, and we made too many of them – especially in the defence.

We are not happy with this performance, but I know we can play good football with possession, and we just need to do better in the attacking third. We kept the ball well in the midfield, our build-up play was also good and counter-pressing was done well. Overall, the team spirit was good and they fought hard to get something from the game.

On the team’s performance over the last two games…

Between the games against Club Eagles and ATK Mohun Bagan, we played much better yesterday and that too against a stronger team. The final third is where we were weak, compared to the match against Club Eagles.

You have to also remember that we are a young team and have just started playing together, whereas a team with experienced players learn and adapt faster. We will take more time to understand the details of the game and show our quality, but I am confident that we will get there soon.

On the upcoming game against Bashundhara Kings…

I think all the teams in the group have very good quality, as I have said before. Bashundhara Kings are probably fitter than us at the moment because their League season is going on and they have the match rhythm. However, we will focus on ourselves and try to play our game. We will try to play our style of football, be better-organized at the back and create chances, and convert them, going forward.

On the Blues’ chances of progressing to the next round…

I cannot tell you if we will go through to the next round or not, because I am not thinking of that now. I cannot comment on it after we lost the first game. My focus is now on the next match, on what we need to do better and improve on. I want us to be focused on defending counter-attacks better and creating more chances in the final third. I am confident that my team will do well against a strong Bashundhara Kings team.
