CAF & COSAFA leave legacy of knowledge in Zimbabwe through African Schools Football Championship!

The football may have been the major focus for fans at the CAF African Schools Football Championship | COSAFA Qualifiers, Zimbabwe 2023, but as is always the case, CAF, working closely with COSAFA have left a legacy of shared knowledge long after the tournament finishes in Harare.

There were seven events aimed at upskilling players, coaches and referees that were held on the sidelines of the regional tournament to boost the experience of participants from around the region.

A CAF-accredited Coaching D-License Course was staged for 36 aspirant tacticians to set them on the path to a career in the dugout. It was led by renowned Namibian coach Timothy Tjongarero.

“It was fantastic to see the talent that we have in the region,” Tjongarero said. “We saw several coaches who have a lot of potential to go far in the game if they keep working hard to acquire more knowledge.

“There is talent in this region for sure, and it is exciting that these coaches will go back to their teams and share these new skills they have acquired. That is how we will grow the game in Southern Africa.”

In addition to this, there was also a two-day Coaching Seminar for 48 participants.

Tjongarero also delivered a clinic at the Harare High School in Mbare for 185 learners.COSAFA Referees Manager and FIFA Instructor Felix Tangawarima led a workshop for young referees who have been officiating at this year’s COSAFA Qualifiers.

There were 31 male and female participants who Tangawarima hopes will be the future when it comes to the region’s elite referees.

“This is the foundation of refereeing and where we start them young. It is a very important tournament for COSAFA from that point of view. The referees that have gone to the World Cup, we start them here. I must say, these youngsters are very intelligent. I am extremely happy with this group,” Tangawarima said.

A safeguarding workshop for 35 participants was also held to not only provide them with information on the social impact of football, but also explaining the measures CAF have put in place to create a safe environment for the children.

Dr Thulani Ngwenya, who serves on the CAF Medical Committee led an Emergency Medical Workshop for 34 participants as he imparted his incredible knowledge of sports medicine.

Finally, there was a workshop for Young Reporters, a mixture of theory and practicals over the three days of the CAF African Schools Football Championship | COSAFA Qualifiers.
