Cruz Azul pre-travel COVID-19 testing for 2020 CONCACAF Champions League!

CONCACAF and the 2020 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) participating clubs are continuing preparations for the successful delivery of the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final of the competition in Orlando, Florida, from December 15-22.

The preparations have required all clubs to follow strict health and safety protocols which include an extensive pre-travel COVID-19 testing regime.

At Cruz Azul several new COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed in the past week and this has led CONCACAF to put additional requirements in place.

These requirements prioritize the health and safety of all participants. They were created following advice from independent medical experts who are supporting the safe delivery of the SCCL in Orlando.

Further details are included below.

Cruz Azul

As part of the CONCACAF required pre-travel testing regime, Cruz Azul informed the confederation early last week that there were new positive cases at the club. This included three players and several non-playing staff who had intended to travel to Orlando.

All the individuals who tested positive were immediately isolated from their team and informed of all relevant protocols and local health requirements.

The club amended its delegation by drafting in replacement players from their original 35-player roster, and additional staff to replace those who tested positive.

CONCACAF insisted that all members of this updated delegation conduct two rounds of pre-travel COVID-19 testing, at least 24 hours apart. These additional tests took place on December 11 and December 12.

In both rounds of testing, all members of the Cruz Azul delegation tested negative for COVID-19 and they have traveled to Orlando today.

Cruz Azul faces LAFC in a Quarterfinal match on Wednesday, December 16, at 10:30 pm ET.
