Sri Lanka’s FFSL organises Pilot Child Safeguarding Awareness Programme!

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL)’s efforts to create a safe and nurturing environment for the country’s young football enthusiasts reached a significant milestone last month when it organised its inaugural Child Safeguarding Awareness programme for the region’s football coaches.
Held on February 24 at the National Football Training Centre Baddegana, the initiative saw 29 coaches participate in several discussions and activities aimed at highlighting the importance of a secure and positive space for youngsters to grow their love for the beautiful game.

An introductory ice-breaking session which shed light on the crucial role that coaches play as mentors in the lives of young athletes was complemented by practical sessions that helped the participants familiarise themselves with the key tenets associated with safeguarding.

The programme introduced several interesting learning tools such as the usage of a green and red card system to help the coaches understand the essential dos and don’ts of Child Safeguarding with ease, which made the experience both engaging and interactive.

Additionally, the initiative also included several group activities which encouraged coaches to collaborate in identifying potential safeguarding issues and brainstorm effective solutions, allowing the mentors to bond over the collective commitment of ensuring the welfare of their young charges.

Receiving widespread appreciation from the participants, the FFSL has vowed to implement numerous other capacity-building programmes for the region’s coaches.

Moreover, in a bid to further ensure that the beautiful game remains safe, accessible and enjoyable to as many people as possible, the Federation also cited plans to harness the power of football to usher positive change in society by extending these programmes to other members of the community, including children, parents, and teachers.
