Former multiple champions Aizawl FC and Chanmari FC battled in the first semifinal first leg of the Mizoram Premier League – Season 8 on Tuesday evening at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Mualpui. A second half strike from Isak Vanlalruatfela proved to be the difference between the two sides in the first 90 minutes as Aizawl FC earned a 1-0 victory.
An even match up on a cold winter evening at Mualpui saw clear chances come few and far between in the first 45 minutes. The best chance for Chanmari FC came through defender Lalrinchhana whose effort went just wide of Aizawl FC’s goal.
Aizawl FC also came close to finding the net through Alfred Jaryan before halftime as Isak Vanlalruatfela proved to be a shining spark in the first period for the defending champions.
Aizawl FC improved slightly after the break as they were able to turn possession in goal threats more often than in the first period. Rochharzela missed a good chance before Lalnunzama came close at the other end for Chanmari FC.
The only goal of the game come in the 71st minute when Isak Vanlalruatfela was put through inside the box and his finish from an angle found the net.
Chanmari FC almost leveled late in the game but MS Dawngliana could only finish wide in a swift counterattacking move.
The two teams will play the return leg next week on Wednesday evening.
