Last season finalists FC Goa held Mumbai City FC to a goalless draw in their Indian Super League – Season 3 encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao on Wednesday night.
The visitors had the first chance of the match in the 4th minute when Defederico found Sunil Chhetri but his left footed attempt was no problems for FC Goa keeper Laxmikant Kattimani. Mumbai City had more of the ball but no chance thereafter as FC Goa needed time to settle down.
The first attempt on goal came in the 22nd minute, but winger Romeo Fernandes put the ball wide of Amrinder Singh’s goal. At the other end Mumbai City’s marquee Diego Forlan had a couple of attempts, one was blocked by Gregory Arnolin and the other tipped over by Kattimani. It stayed goalless at the break.
In the second session FC Goa were better in the match, but Mumbai City FC had the better chances to score. In the 62nd minute Forlan beat Arnolin on the right, but Sunil Chhetri first missed to hit the ball and his second attempt was blocked. Only three minutes later Forlan was send through, he also got the shot past Kattimani but Arnolin got to the ball before it crossed the goal line.
FC Goa had a good chance in the 78th minute when a Mandar Rao Desai cross was put wide under pressure by Robin Singh. Again at the other end in the 83rd minute Sunil Chhetri had his final chance of the night but his good attempt was put out by Kattimani for a corner.
FC Goa pushed for the winner towards the end and they had a big opportunity in injury time as Brazilian substitutes Trindade Goncalves and Julio Cesar combined with Trindade sending Cesar free but his shot was saved by an outstretched Amrinder Singh to keep the score goalless.
