Mumbai City FC & coach Alexandre Guimaraes part ways ahead of ISL-5!

Indian Super League franchise Mumbai City FC today announced that they and their head coach Alexandre Henrique Borges Guimarães have parted ways ahead of ISL-5.

At Mumbai City FC, Guimaraes had a successful first season qualifying the team to the ISL-3 semifinals for the first time ever after topping the league stage, but they suffered a heart breaking loss to Atletico de Kolkata in the semifinals.

In the 2017/18 season of ISL-4, Mumbai City FC despite all the raised expectations did not make it to the semifinals and since then there were speculations if Guimaraes would continue or not with the Islanders.

The 58 year old Brazilian-born Costa Rican is best known for his great achievements as the Head Coach of the Costa Rica National team, leading them past the qualifying stages for the 2002 and the 2006 FIFA World Cups. He started coaching Belén, then moved to Herediano in summer 1996, where he achieved good results with both teams.

Thereafter Guimaraes was on board with Deportivo Saprissa, where he worked for several years, winning three national tournaments with them. He has also coached several teams internationally, such as Comunicaciones of Guatemala, Irapuato and Dorados de Sinaloa in Mexico and tasted success with teams like Al Wasl and Al-Dhafra in the UAE besides Tianjin Teda in China.

Mumbai City FC will announce in due course, who will be their coach for ISL – Season 5.
