Aizawl FC beat Mohun Bagan 1-0, go top of I-League table, but title decision next Sunday!

Aizawl FC scored a vital 1-0 win over Mohun Bagan in a top of the table I-league clash at a sellout Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl on Saturday afternoon.

With this win Aizawl FC now go clear at the top of the table with 36 points from 17 matches, while Mohun Bagan are second on 33 points from the same number of games meaning the Northeastern side just need a point from their final game at Shillong Lajong FC to seal a memorable first I-League title, while Mohun Bagan need to win their final game against Chennai City FC and hope for an Aizawl FC loss to lift the title.

The conditions in Mizoram were not easy for both teams on a cool and rainy day with fog causing a lot of problems and the match halted a couple of times by the referee due to the dense fog.

It was the guests from Kolkata who had the first chance in the 3rd minute of Scottish striker Darryl Duffy, but the Mohun Bagan strikers shot was saved by Aizawl FC keeper Albino Gomes.

Thereafter the match evened out with a lot of midfield action and few chances at both ends with visibility sometimes dropping to close to zero, which also made matters difficult for both sides.

Towards the end of the first session, Aizawl FC seemed to get a better grip of the game with a Jayesh Rane effort going wide before an added time effort from Alfred Jayran which also goes wide. The first half ended goalless.

Aizawl FC came out with more intent into the second session with Mohun Bagan not able to keep up with their opponents.

But Aizawl FC missed chances through Jayesh Rane, Laldanmawia Ralte, and Stephane Baye Kamo before a Mahmoud Al Amna corner in the 83rd minute is headed in by defender Zohmingliana Ralte.

Aizawl FC are now ahead and only a goal more today would settle the I-league title race and they would get a golden opportunity in the first minute of added time, when on a counter the ball comes to Lalram Chullova on the left but he does not find either Amna or Kamo free as Mohun Bagan clear.

At the final whistle the stadium erupted in joy as Aizawl FC took a big step towards their first-ever I-League title, which will now be decided on the last match day next week.
