The 2017 season of the Calcutta Football League – Premier Division ‘A’ is set to end tomorrow, September 24 with a Kolkata derby between East Bengal Club and Mohun Bagan set to decide the CFL title race.
The Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri not one of the stadiums in Kolkata will play host to the fitting finale of a great 2017 CFL campaign, which has seen record crowds and interest amongst football fans across Bengal.
The Kolkata derby will be something completely new for East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil, whose team goes into the final match knowing that a draw would be enough to lift the Calcutta Football League title for a record breaking eight time in a row.
It has been a quick learning curve for Khalid Jamil, who joined the red and gold as I-League winning coach with Aizawl FC, and from day one, he knew that the task at hand is of a different calibre than coaching Mumbai FC and Aizawl FC. Now he can achieve his first silverware in Kolkata, but he knows that it will not be easy.
East Bengal will once more reply on the brilliance of their experienced Syrian midfielder Mahmoud al Amna, who has led by example and will hope that Trinidad and Tobago striker Willis Deon Plaza comes good in the derby after scoring a hattrick in the last match against Tollygunge Agragami.
At the other camp for Shankarlal Chakraborty it won’t be his first Kolkata derby of his career, but the first as a head coach and the level headed Shankarlal knows that his team would have to win to snatch the title away from their archrivals. Therefore he has put the pressure on East Bengal as they have something to lose as per the Mariners coach.
Mohun Bagan will depend on their potent African strike force in Kamo Stephane Bayi and Ansumana Kromah, who have been amongst the goals and their young Indian brigade, who would have to rise to the occasion.
An interesting match-up which will decide the CFL title race, a highlight hopefully also on the pitch in Siliguri.
