In a major surprise in the North Zone qualifiers of the 71st Santosh Trophy being played in Sundernagar, Himachal Pradesh; Chandigarh topped Group A to qualify for the final round.
Chandigarh after defeating the hosts Himachal Pradesh (4-1) and group favourites Delhi (1-0), they yesterday on the final day of the year defeated Uttar Pradesh 2-0 to finish the group with an all win record.
Chandigarh took an early lead through a Gagan Kalyan header and doubled it in the 44th minute through a long ranger from Girish to seal the win in the first half itself as no more goals were scored after the break.
In the days other group game hosts Himachal Pradesh edged past Delhi 1-0. The winner came early in the 4th minute through HP captain Gagandeep Bali.
An embarassing Delhi ended the North Zone qualifiers group stage with their third 0-1 loss in a row and at the bottom of the table.
