East Bengal name Mridul Banerjee as their head coach for the rest of 2016/17 season!

East Bengal Club on Tuesday, April 18 named Bengal’s Santosh Trophy winning coach Mridul Banerjee as their head coach for the remainder of the 2016/17 season for the two remaining I-League matches and the upcoming Federation Cup.

The appointment came as a surprise as overnight the news had come through that former club coach Armando Colaco would be taking charge of the team for the remaining six weeks of the season, but then the club constituted core technical committee consisting of three members in Bhaskar Ganguly, Manoranjan Bhattacharya, and Tushar Rakshit took the decision to appoint Banerjee instead of Colaco.

Mridul Banerjee after his appointment said, “It is surprising that East Bengal have slumped like this because they have so many good players. I will have to speak to players to find out what went wrong. I am sure these players can do better.”

After four losses in a row, Mridul Banerjee’s first task will be to get the team back to winning ways in their final couple of I-League before looking to achieve the maximum in the upcoming Federation Cup in Cuttack.

Mridul Banerjee is an experienced coach, who has coached the India juniors besides the Bengal senior and junior state teams besides club sides like Green Valley SC of Guwahati, been caretaker of Mohun Bagan AC and earlier this season coached Mohammedan Sporting Club to a second place finish in the Calcutta Football League’s Premier Division ‘A’.
