Independence Day Cup 2017: Aizawl FC win their opening match!

The ‘Great Sports’ Independence Day Cup kicked off in style today at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl with defending champions Aizawl FC beating 2015 finalists Bethlehem Vengthlang FC.

I-League champions Aizawl FC took the lead on the 18th minute when Lalrinzuala Khiangte pounced on a rebound after Lalruatfela Zote had struck the post.

Bethlehem Vengthlang FC then equalised 10 minutes later after Dina Varte won a penalty. B. Zoramthara stepped up and duly converted the spot kick. And it was BVT FC who then controlled proceedings and they could’ve taken the lead before halftime with Dina Varte coming close.

BVT FC began the second half in the same manner and B. Zoramthara missed a great chance. But it was Aizawl FC who took the lead again as new Nigerian defender Kareem Omolaja struck a great freekick.

BVT FC came close to an equaliser on several occasions but they ultimately paid for their profligacy in front of goal.

The second fixture of the day saw Ramhlun North FC soundly beat Dinthar FC with a 4-1 victory.

What was expected to be an even affair was tilted in RNFC’s favour after DFC’s Stephen Lalnunmawia was sent off in the first half.

Ramhlun North FC then scored two in four minutes just before half-time with strikes from C. Ramdinmawia and Lalliansanga.

Dinthar FC managed to pull one back through Samuel Laltlanthanga, but in the end it was smooth sailing for RNFC as striker Francis Onyema grabbed a brace late on.
