2018 FIFA World Cup – Group A: Hosts Russia overcome Egypt in 3-1 win!

The 2018 FIFA World Cup continued on Tuesday, June 19 evening with hosts Russia taking a big step to qualify for the knockout stage by beating Egypt 3-1 at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

Russia started the stronger of the two sides after their opening day win, but things evened out through the first half as Egypt looked a different side with their superstar Mohammed Salah on the pitch. At the break it was goalless.

But things changed at the start of the second session as Egypt captain Ahmed Fathy trying to clear a ball ahead of Dzyuba but put it into his own teams net and this gave the Russians the believe that they could win also against Egypt.

The Sbornaja continued to attack and it was once more Denis Cheryshev who in the 59th minute doubled the lead with his third goal of the tournament while only three minutes later Artyom Dzyuba made it 3-0 for the hosts.

Egypt now got more space with Russia sure of their own win and it was a foul on Salah giving with the support of VAR that allowed the Liverpool winger to score his first FIFA World Cup goal off a penalty in the 67th minute, but that was it on the night as Russia won 3-1 and are close to qualifying for the pre-quarterfinals.
