Bundesliga: Hans-Dieter Flick joins 1899 Hoffenheim management!

The shareholders of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim Fußball-Spielbetriebs GmbH have appointed Hans-Dieter Flick as Managing Director with effect from July 1, 2017. Thus, the 52-year-old native of Heidelberg, together with Dr. Peter Görlich and Frank Briel, is the clubs leading trio in the Bundesliga.

“I am very happy to be able to work in the Bundesliga after a successful decade at the DFB,” said Flick who played for FC Bayern München (104 games) and 1.FC Köln (44) in Germany’s Bundesliga before he had to end his active career because of a knee injury at the age of 28.

The new Managing Director Sports sees the prerequisites at 1899 Hoffenheim as “outstanding at all levels”. The staffing of TSG’s professional and junior department, who will be responsible in future, “as well as the infrastructure, set standards far beyond the Bundesliga”. Flick sees it as one of his main tasks “to further develop and strengthen this competence built up over the past few years together with the directors Alexander Rosen and Dirk Mack, as well as taking part in a European competition to participate.”

Not least because of its innovative power, the TSG for Flick is “one of the first addresses in German football. The holistic approach and the cooperation, for example, with kick-off to life, give the TSG an exception here.” This basis was to be used to consistently pursue the most recent way of integrating players trained in their own academy into the professional squad. “In the coach Julian Nagelsmann and the director of professional sport Alexander Rosen, I have the best partners at my side who can only be desired. The latest development of the TSG is very closely linked to Julian and Alex,” said Flick. “The overall package, which was completed by participating in a European competition, made it easy for me to opt for the TSG,” says Flick, who had been approached by several Bundesliga rivals.

“Specialization and networking are driving aspects in modern football,” says Dr. Peter Görlich. “The abundance of tasks within the management has grown enormously over the last one and a half years, and in the coming months, further major challenges are waiting for us,” adds Görlich, who will also be involved in the increasingly important fields in addition to innovation, sponsorship and marketing Internationalization and digitization. In addition, the TSG is currently working on a comprehensive concept for social engagement (CSR), which will be significantly expanded in the next few years. These include, among others, the complete realignment of the children’s and youth world.

Frank Briel, who has been the master of finance, organization and IT at TSG for many years, will also be organizing the construction of the new Research Lab at the training and business center in Zuzenhausen over the coming months. On an area of around 600 square meters, the new building will be equipped with an expanded performance diagnostics and a so-called digital boardroom as well as the achtzehn99 Reha GmbH.

“Hansi Flick is one of the most profound experts in German football, and it is a great pleasure to be able to win him for us, and it is an ideal addition to the TSG management team through its experience and contacts,” said owner Dietmar Hopp, who has always stayed in touch with Flick over the years. “I am convinced that I am not only able to fill this exciting, multi-faceted and future-oriented task, but also to develop new impulses,” says Flick, whose batteries are now full again. A statement which, in addition to Dietmar Hopp, also rejoiced Peter Hofmann: “Hansi stands for the Hoffenheim path, is familiar with the structures here because of his past in the club and by living in this region.”

Hans-Dieter Flick has served for 10 years in the service of the German Football Association (DFB). Most recently, he held the post of sports director. The main focus of his work was elite promotion, taking into account all available scientific and scientific knowledge. In addition to scouting, this included performance diagnostics and video analysis.

Prior to his work as a sports director, he was assistant coach of the national team for eight years, where he became world champion in Brazil in 2014. Before working alongside Bundestrainer Joachim Löw, Flick trained his home club FC Victoria Bammental (1996-2000) and was a member of the Austrian Red Bull Salzburg (2006) under Giovanni Trapattoni. His first big success as coach, however, he celebrated with the TSG Hoffenheim, which he trained from 2000 to 2005. In his first year as a TSG coach, he made the top-flight ascent to the regional league. No less surprising was the spectacular 3:2 victory against Bayer Leverkusen in 2003, with which the then regional rival TSG Hoffenheim moved into the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup. Now, Flick returns as Managing Director Sport to the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
