Newcomers FC Bardez will make their debut in the Goa Pro League when they take on former champions Salgaocar FC at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa tomorrow. Both teams will be keen to start the new GPL season with a win.
The two sides come into the game in buoyant mood. The Greens won the season curtain-raiser against Sporting Clube de Goa, while Armando Colaco’s men lifted their maiden silverware in their first official tournament with their resounding success in the Goa Police Cup.
FC Bardez left-back Jessel Carneiro has been in good form for his new club and has formed a solid partnership with centre-back Rowilson Rodrigues. But tomorrow he will be up against Salgaocar FC skipper Gilbert Oliviera who played a crucial role to help his team to reach the semifinals of the Goa Police Cup.
FC Bardez goalkeeper Mirshad K. will be between the sticks for the newcomers and he will be up against Liston Colaco, Souvik Das and Naro Hari Shrestha who form the attack of the Greens. Mirshad is yet to concede a goal in his time with FC Bardez and the Salgaocar trio will be out to beat him on opening day.
Former Salgaocar winger Alesh Sawant who was one of FC Bardez’s stars in the last tournament spoke ahead of the season opener, ”They are a tough opponent for us but team spirit is what I believe in. The whole team enjoys football and is working hard in practice sessions and hard work automatically pays off. We started the Police Cup well and we won it. I’m really happy about that.”
He also went on to praise coach Armando Colaco saying that the experienced manager is friendly with the players and encourages them to give their best on the pitch in every game.
Armando Colaco said before the GPL opener, “Of course Salgaocar is a great team. I hope my boys continue the way they play. Winning and losing is part of the game. They have been playing well and I’m confident they will play the same way tomorrow as well.”
